Families of our students are welcome to become a member of the Friends of Strathmore Community School. The Friends is an incorporated society with a growing membership of over 15 families who represent the ethnic diversity of the school. Most are parents of current students, but there is no membership criteria except enthusiasm!
There are currently two upcoming vacancies for officers of the Friends group. Get in touch - we'd love to get to know you.!
The Friends support the School by raising funds for projects to benefit the school and also the wider community. Our projects include:
- Swimming pool
We are currently working to raise funds for the community swim school project. Our fundraising so far has included raffles, a garage-sale-and-sausage-sizzle, a students-and-family disco, and other events linked to the school. We really need our community to get engaged with this project, so please use the above link to find out more!
- School library
We received grants for shelving and new library books and drew on community expertise and corporate volunteers to get the library up and running. Our new Library was officially opened on 10 September 2008, and has since seen more improvements.
- Music lessons
We raised funds to buy a set of ukuleles and to pay for teachers' professional development in music. We invited the Wellington Ukulele Orchestra to perform at the school, and this event was covered on Close Up on TV1. The ukulele has since become part of our school's general character.
- School Garden
We received a grant and donations to plant a vegetable garden and involve the children as part of our school's philosophies of environmental awareness and healthy eating. Community volunteers come in to work with the children on Discovery Fridays. (See Our Day.) If you can volunteer some time to help too, please contact us.
- Senior playground
We are currently applying for funding for a new senior playground for the school.
If you are interested in finding out more about the Friends, helping out with our projects, or joining the group, please ask the school for contact details.
