Merger with Miramar South School

Find out here about the Ministry of Education's proposal that Strathmore Community School and Miramar South School merge.

For upwards of a decade, there has been informal discussion about a possible merger of the two schools, as neither currently has a full roll.

Quick summary

Former Minister of Education, Anne Tolley, opened formal discussions about making this happen. She asked both schools to make submissions on the following three options:

  1. Merge the two schools on the Strathmore Community School site
  2. Merge the two schools on the Miramar South School site
  3. Another option that the school communities may propose

The current Minister, Hekia Parata, recently advised the decision. See Minister's Letter to Board. In short, the two schools will merge and operate as a Year 1 to 8 school on the Strathmore site, from the beginning of the 2013 school year.

History of the decision

Public consultation with the schools' communities took place in June and July 2011, led by an external facilitator. Feedback received from surveys and consultation meetings was compiled as a report to the Ministry of Educationand submitted to the Ministry of Education in August. The Minister's decision was advised in December 2011.
