Addressing teachers
Our school practice is for our students to address our female teachers as 'Whaea' (fa-ee-ya). A basic translation of this Mäori word is 'aunt', but in the context of a school environment, Whaea can be interpreted as 'teacher (female)'.
When we have male teachers on staff, students address them as as 'Matua' (mah-too-ah), which has a parallel meaning.
